The problem

What actually goes wrong

Within a turn, structure is held by the grammar and coherence is a solved problem. Across several paragraphs it is not. There is no mechanism in an n-gram distribution that maintains an argument, tracks what has been conceded, or keeps a thesis in view over five hundred words.

This is not a tuning deficit or a context window that needs widening. The representation does not contain the thing that would have to be maintained.

The impact

Who this affects, and how much

Ackren is a conversational engine and conversation is turn-shaped, so for the deployments we are targeting this limit binds rarely. Intake, disclosure, triage and suitability conversations are exchanges rather than essays.

It binds absolutely on anything that looks like drafting. Reports, summaries of a case file, correspondence: these are not near-term applications and describing them as such would be dishonest about a schedule.

What it means

The honest reading

It means authorship is a research problem and it will never appear on a roadmap slide as a forthcoming pack. If you see it listed as one, that slide is wrong and we would like to know which deck it came from.

It also means our claims are bounded by the turn. When we say every output can be re-derived by hand, the output in question is a response, not a document.

Stated position

This limit is published before anyone else finds it. It is one of eleven rows in the failure accounting, and it will not be quietly removed from this page if it becomes inconvenient.

Roadmap

What we are doing about it

  • 01

    Now

The limit is stated and scoped: coherence holds within a turn, and we do not sell drafting.

  • 02

    Next

Session-level state, which is not coherence but covers a useful part of what people want from it: what was established earlier in the conversation, recorded and re-derivable.

  • 03

    Later

Discourse structure as authored material rather than inferred, for narrow document types where the shape is genuinely conventional. Speculative and not committed.

  • 04

    Never

A general authorship claim. The honest position is that this is unsolved and that we are not the ones who will solve it by scaling.
